Western Wildcats Hockey Club - The Wildcats Challenge

What is The Wildcats Challenge?

Hockey is progressing all the time. Players demand the best and at Western Wildcats we are determined to provide that.

Top level hockey must be played on water-based artificial surfaces. All international and European games are played on these as a matter of course. It is simply a matter of time before this becomes a requirement for domestic league and cup competition.

At Western Wildcats we are used to taking the lead. We intend to meet the challenge to install a water-based surface at our Auchenhowie home within two seasons with the same relish that we compete for the game’s top honours year-in, year-out.

A Message From Roger Jamieson

"Our vision is to provide the very best facilities possible for hockey in the West of Scotland. We have set ourselves the ambitious and exciting goal of being the first club in the country to lay its own water-based playing surface.

We have delivered unprecedented success over the last fifteen years and we intend to ensure that our future is as bright as our past. Meeting this challenge will require strong leadership and the moral and financial support of members, ex-members and the local community.

Roger Jamieson

Director of Hockey

Update

Preparatory work has begun and the pitch area will be out of bounds from 3rd October 2011. From this point the old surface will be lifted and the new one laid. Given the weather conditions and amount of remedial work required on the old tarmacadam, we hope to have the new pitch playable by the second half of the season.

Why Does The Wildcats Challenge Matter?

Formed in 1898, Western is the oldest hockey club in Scotland. In our long history we have always been at the forefront of the game, a dynamic force for progress, change and excellence at every turn.

We have won 7 Scottish League titles 9 Scottish Cups and compete regularly at the top level in Europe. We have produced 57 full internationalists and countless U21 and Junior players. Two of our members represented Great Britain in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

We pride ourselves in our unstinting commitment to providing every young person in the local community with the chance to enjoy hockey, no matter their experience or level of ability. We are a vibrant club in a vibrant area. Our hugely popular junior coaching sessions are a testament to our belief in the future of our community, the future of our sport and the future of our club.

Western Wildcats has thrived for over 100 years. We intend to thrive for at least 100 more. The first step on this exciting journey is The Wildcats’ Challenge.
