Match Report - 12 Dec 2009, Western Wildcats Hockey Club Women 2 beat Argyle
Wildcats 2's returned to winning ways with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over 3rd place Argyle.
Coach had asked for the team to start on the B of bang and he wasnt disappointed. The pace of captain Katie Dougherty down the right had the Argyle defence in disarry from the off. At the first penalty corner of the game Alice MacArthur's deflected shot gave the home side a deserved lead. Strong defending and an impressive display by the Argyle centre midfield kept the score to 1-0 at the half. But in truth there had been only one team in it. 'Cat's keeper Stephanie Gillespie didnt make a single save in either half such was the dominace of the home side in both possession and territory.
Reserve Radhika Chaudhuri stepped into the starting lineup due to an injury to starting centre back Sarafilovic and the impressive defensive unit that has only lost 5 league goals all season didnt miss a beat. Kate MacArthur continues to impress as a sweeper and is developing a Beckenbauer-esque ability to turn defence into attack with apparent ease.
The second half started as the first had finished, constant pressure on the Argyle circle and stalwart defending preventing the home side from getting clear goal scoring opprtunities. A smart short corner move between MacAthur and player of the match Juliet Gordon came back off the post. Yet the score remained 1-0 and Argyle must have thought that they might have managed to sneak a result the longer the game went on. The Wildcats second came from a mazy run from Alice MacArthur across the top of the visitor's circle. Her reverse stick pass (?shot) found Sarah Goodwin at the back post for a well taken goal. Argyle's head seemed to drop and chance after chance followed. The third of the game as Dougherty took an early side line self pass and found that the defence had parted in front of her like the Red Sea. She drove into the circle and crashed the ball into the goal.
On the Western left Hannah Carroll was a constant thorn in the Argyle defence, her silky runs matched by smart link up play with Emma Reece and Jennifer Pate . The last goal was worked down the Western left and found Alice MacArthur who finished with style for her 2nd of the game.
An impressive team performance and a well deserved result. Tomorrow the 2's visit Team Strathclyde for what should be another tough match
