Match Report - 19 Mar 2011, Western Wildcats Hockey Club Men 5 lost to Motherwell 2
The fives entered this match knowing full well that to guarantee promotion they would need nothing less than the full 3 points. The first half was an uphill struggle producing little to show for their efforts. The fives were very fortunate not to go a goal down when a flick was awarded against Gary Blackshaw when the ball struck him in the chest on the goal line. Luckily the Motherwell forward put it well wide and didnt even trouble Richard Higham. However the team was thankful when the half time whistle finally blew.
In the second half the fives went a goal down fairly swiftly from a converted short corner. Shortly after this the ball broke from open play catching the defence off guard and allowing Motherwell to double their lead. However we were granted an opportunity to pull one back with a penalty flick of our own. Gavin Yates took the flick however was denied by the Motherwell keeper. With a one man advantage Western upped the ante with Gary Blackshaw managing to pick up a nifty goal from a short corner. However it was too little too late and would serve only as a consolation goal with the result finishing 2-1 to Motherwell.
