Match Report - 16 Apr 2011, Western Wildcats Hockey Club Men 5 drew with Hillhead 5

In the fives final league fixture they faced Hillhead, a team who the week previously quashed their promotion hopes. However determined not to go out with a whimper but end the season on a familiar roar, the game opened with Western taking control and applying plenty of pressure creating a number of opportunities up front. Hillhead though proved themselves worthy adversaries, at times tearing through Western defences and not long before half time opening the scoring from a quickly auto-played free hit. Western heads went down, shape was lost, criticism became destructive rather than constructive and then out of nowhere from a long corner a Hillhead striker ghosted in to double their lead. When the halftime whistle blew none were more grateful than the Western captain.

The beginning of the second half seemed to herald a different team onto the pitch with western slipping back into the method of hockey they've played all season. Pulling a goal back about 10 minutes in allowed the belief that the game was not entirely over. With not long remaining Colin Douglas managed to sneak an equaliser in at the back post. Western continued to press for a winner however it was not to be. With such fierce competition from a tough opposition a draw was more than likely a fair enough result.
