Match Report - 22 Oct 2011, Western Wildcats Hockey Club Men 6 lost to Ayr 3
The scoreline here says nothing about how the match went. For the first 10-15 mins of the game our defense set up camp on the half way line as we most of the ball in the opposition half, however our attackers coudln't unlock the ayr defence. Ayr started to then get back into the game and managed to penetrate our defence a couple of times and with thier second attack they managed to get a goal. We then almost had a huge bust up with Mike who was umpiring for us who had blown for a short just before ayr scored a second goal which he then tried to give before we started moaning at him and get him to chat with the other umpire and eventually give the short instead of the goal. We thankfully managed to clear the short. Ayr managed to get a second a bit before half time. The second half was a bit more even to start with with our juniors still keeping up with Ayr, we unfortunatley lost another 2 goals, one of them being my fault, and i'm not even sure fully what happened apart from me mucking up a clearance from defence and allowing them through 1 on 1 with Pat in goal. At this point I think both Gary and I at the back began pushing up a bit more to try and help the attack to try and get a goal know we had lost the game. At one point after intercepting a clearance by ayr I had a nice we run up the wing and found both gary and myself in the opposition 25 which was probably not a great idea as it only left Robbie and possibly Fraser at the back in defence.
I have to say the all our juniors played well not being scared to take on anyone with or without the ball, with having 3 players at only 11 years old all starting the game, Andrew McConnell, Lewis Murray and Rory McDiarmid. Luke Cranney played his first game in centre mid with Ali T and was a star there. Cameron McKecnie was switched to right wing this week for his second game and played far better than last week with a few less back sticks, and his shinty skills coming through with some of his strange hitting of the ball. I would have to give my men of the match to all these guys for thier hard work all day and running about as much as they could. If only the younger ones had slightly longer legs they may have been able to keep up with the larger players in the ayr team who could run past them a bit to easily at times. We even had one of the guys who was managing/coaching the ayr team come into the dressing room after the game and prasing our boys for how well they had played.
With time and more of our regular players in the team I think we could start getting a few good results.
Team line up was:
Pat C
Fraser G, Richard B, Gary B, Robbie R,
Cameron M, Ali T, Luke C, Rory M,
Lewis M, Andrew M
