AZZURRI KELBURNE 4 WESTERN WILDCATS 1 On Saturday at Bellahouston, in front of a large support, Western Wildcats surrendered their unbeaten league record, and in all probability their chance of winning the Division I title. Positive from the start, Dougie Simpson scored the opener with a shot from an acute angle after a Dave Mansouri free hit in seven minutes. Within a couple of minutes his brother Joe could have added to the lead, but his reverse stick shot was saved. As the half progressed Kelburne became more assertive in attack, but Kris Kane was in fine form with some excellent blocks. Wildcats were finding it more difficult to sustain their attacking forays, but after a speedy break out of defence Dougie Simpson won a corner. Unfortunately skipper Sewnauth’s attempt came at a comfortable height for the keeper, and the chance was lost. At the other end Kris dealt efficiently with two short corner attempts, but he was eventually beaten four minutes before the break by a rasping shot, after the ball broke to an unmarked Kelburne player at the top of the ‘D’. Early in the second half Chris Mitchell was sin-binned, perhaps harshly, for a clumsy challenge. Nicky Parkes came on to reinforce the midfield and, showing no ill effects from his recent finger injury, injected some vigour and artistry. He worked his way into the circle but his reverse stick shot failed to beat the keeper. Nine minutes into the half Kelburne went into the lead after Wildcats lost possession on their 25. There was some dubiety about it, but the goal stood. Three minutes later Wildcats had a great opportunity to draw level when Scott McCartney and Dougie Simpson outpaced the Kelburne defence, but Scott’s pass wide of the oncoming keeper was a touch heavy and eluded Dougie’s despairing dive to put the ball in the unguarded net. As the half progressed Kelburne were the more dominant, and the Wildcats defence endured some spells of intense pressure. Use of the aerial ball to alleviate this had little benefit, and attacks were sporadic rather than concerted. With ten minutes remaining, though, another corner was forced, but the keeper managed to divert a strong flick over the bar. In the last quarter the pressure increased as Wildcats searched for the equaliser which could have secured the championship, and their discipline wavered. Two yellow cards were given in the final 10 minutes, and Kelburne exploited this with two goals at the death. Wildcats are guaranteed second place, having completed their league schedule with 37 points from 14 games. Kelburne currently sit on 33 points with two games to play, but it would be a major surprise if they were to falter at this stage. There were mixed results in the cup for the other teams. On Saturday the 3’s fought out a 2-2 draw away to Carnegie, but lost the penalty shoot-out 4-5. However the 2’s triumphed in Aberdeen against Granite City, 5-3 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw. |
