The last 12 months have seen quite the turnaround for our Men's 1s indoor. This time last year they were scratching around in a play-off to secure promotion to Division 1. This Saturday, after an outstanding season in which they have beaten every team in the division, they play Menzieshill in the Men's Grand Final at Bells (1600).
Although the club has something of a tradition in the indoor game, principally through its stewardship of and participation in the Glenfiddich tournament, we have never lifted a senior domestic trophy indoor. Menzieshill, of course, are a powerhouse in the winter code having dominated the sport in Scotland for decades despite challenges from MIM, Dundee Wanderers and, latterly, Inverleith.
Coach James Moran is relishing the challenge. "It's been an excellent season so far and one where I've seen the boys mature and really learn how to play indoor hockey. In the past we were impetuous and too focused on going forward. We've learned to be more pragmatic and value possession far more."
"Adam MacKenzie has been enormously important. He has great experience and loves playing indoor and that's been a big influence on our team. You have to remember how young the boys still are. They are very fit and enthusiastic but are still learning the game so improvements in their tactical understanding and basics added to their existing ability has led to real progress."
"It's a big challenge. Obviously Menzieshill are favourites due to their experience and track record but we are really excited and full of confidence. The atmosphere in the group is great and we have trained well this week with another session tonight. It should be a great game."
The boys have worked very hard to get themselves into this position and deserve every bit of support going so please make the effort to get up to the Bells Sports Centre in Perth to cheer them on. There is a full day of games as the indoor season culminates in its Gala Day with the Men's Grand Final as the final fixture.
Elsewhere, the Men's 3s are back in action against Kelburne 3s at Glasgow Green (1330) and the 4s play Hillhead 6s at home (1330).
