MEN TAKE INDOOR TITLE

04 Feb 2019

The Men's 1s upset the odds on Saturday with a thrilling running penalties vistory over Menzieshill to take the Scottish indoor title for the very first time.

In a close, competitive game Western drew first blood with an excellent finish from Andrew McConnell early on. Menzieshill soon replied and the pattern of a nip and tuck contest was set. The Dundonians took a 2-1 lead before McConnell got Western back on level terms before the interval.

The second half was only two minutes old when Menzieshill were awarded a penalty stroke. Western survived, though, as their effort hit the post. With a few minutes remaining McConnell completed his hat-trick with an outstanding run and finish. True to form, though, the game was soon back level as Gavin Tomlinson scored for Menzieshill.

Western had to survive an overtime corner before the game went to penalties. After a nail-biting first six efforts the scores were locked at 1-1 until who else but McConnell stepped up to take the crown for Western.

While the plaudits obviously and deservedly go to the younger McConnell, big brother Joe was an impressive force throughout the game and a contender for man-of-the-match. Gavin Sommerville played a captain's role in goals making some vital stops and Adam MacKenzie showed his experience throughout.

All in all this win was as pleasing as it was unexpected. This is Western's first ever senior trophy indoor and our first in either code since 2011. It also brings European hockey back to Auchenhowie for the first time in years. That all this was achieved in their first season back in the division adds another layer of polish.

Western winning the indoor, eh? Who'd have thunk it!
