It’s a big weekend for our Men’s 1s with Kelburne away on Saturday then a trip to Edinburgh to play Grange on Sunday.
Saturday is a 1220 start at Glasgow Green. Kelburne v Western is always an event and this one provides an exciting opportunity for the 1s to get back to competitive hockey after so many postponed fixtures recently. One particular point of interest is the involvement of Johnny Christie for Western who previously enjoyed a long spell at Kelburne which dripped with trophies. Kelburne’s start to the season has been respectable with two wins, two defeats and two draws but Western go into the game as favourites having only dropped two points all season.
Sunday’s game – a 1600 start at Fettes – looks very significant. Grange have won all their games so far and it’s fair to say that the title is in all likelihood going to be a fight between the Chaps and Western. A win here is huge while a draw isn’t a disaster but a defeat would be a setback.
Vishal was upbeat and confident ahead of the game. He said, “We have a full squad to pick from and we are looking forward to the games after the disruption from the World Cup qualifiers. We know both games will be tough but we always back ourselves.”
He went on, “The squad as a whole is in good form but Andrew McConnell in particular is doing well having put in some really good performances for Scotland.”
The 2s are at home to Glasgow University 2s (1030) and will be targeting a win against a side with seven points from seven games. The 3s are on straight after them at noon against Helensburgh. These are always enjoyable games and this one should be good against an undefeated Helensburgh side. The 4s look heavy favourites away to Clydesdale 5s while the 5s go to Hillhead 7s.
The Women’s 1s are away to Erskine Stewart’s Melville and really should win comfortably. ESM are rock bottom with no points and a grim looking goal difference. The 2s are away to Kelburne 2s and should be confident given their recent good form while the 3s are away to GHK 6s at 1230.
