It’s an absolutely massive game at Titwood on Saturday as the Men’s 1s visit Clydesdale (1500). Western are just three games away from a first Scottish title in 18 years and, with a five point lead over holders Grange, very much in the box seat.
However, should the visitors slip up on Saturday, Grange will more than likely come to Auchenhowie on 23rd April with the gap down to just two points. Put simply, a win just about wraps up the championship for Western; a defeat blows the whole thing wide open.
“It’s a big game,” said Vishal, “but at this stage in the season they are all big games. They drew with us at home last time and have gone on a really good run so we know it’s going to be a difficult match. However, since then we have improved too and had some good results where the boys have shown great character.”
Western are missing Adam MacKenzie Senior and Johnny Christie. Andrew McConnell has missed the last couple of games with a hamstring problem but may return on Saturday.
Given the significance of this game we would encourage absolutely everyone who can make it to get along to Titwood to cheer on the boys.
As an undercard we have another team three wins away from a title. The Men’s 2s play Clydesdale 2s at 1330 and need to win this plus their remaining two games to win the Regional League.
The Women’s 1s have had a frustrating time since the split with injuries and Covid blowing a hole in their regular selection. Things are beginning to get back to normal, though, and they are in much better shape selection-wise this weekend. They play Edinburgh University at Auchenhowie (1500). The 2s are away to GHK.
Sunday is cup semi-final day and we have three teams in action. If Saturday is all about the Men’s 1s then on Sunday the focus is very much on the women.
They are at Peffermill and are looking to reach their first ever Scottish Cup final with a tie against Premiership leaders Watsonians (1615). The Edinburgh side are a very strong outfit. However, Wildcats have taken them to the wire a couple of times this season so will fancy their chances.
Kaz said, “We have a full squad with both Wardy and me back in the fold and we are relishing the challenge. They are a team we have done well against and know we can beat.”
The Men’s 1s play Dunfermline Carnegie at GNHC, also at 1615. The 2s play Hillhead 2s at 1015 at the same venue.
