GIRLS IN THE MIX FOR EURO PLAY-OFF

21 Jan 2013

Another excellent set of of results leaves our girls just two points off fourth place and a play-off for Europe with two games of the league season remaining.

A 4-4 draw with CALA and 4-2 wins over Granite City Wanderers and Kelburne yesterday backed up Rachael's bullish assertion that fourth place is a realistic target and they must now beat MCC Western and Inverleith if they are to secure a play-off place. This has been an excellent debut season in Division 1 and they will go into their final games in a fortnight with genuine confidence.

It was a chaotic day for the boys on Saturday. They were 3-0 up on pointless Harris within five minutes before losing the plot and then the game 7-6. Another defeat, this time by Grange, had them looking down the barrel of a relegation fight. However, they rallied and beat Clydesdale 6-3, despite a flurry of cards (including a red for coach Joe Simpson). While the drop is still mathematically possible, it would require a massive swing in goal difference between Western and Clydesdale and they are now essentially safe.

On Sunday the Women's 2s lost 3-0 to Glasgow University. Weakened by prelim exams, they played well and were unlucky with skipper Fiona Griffin an inspiration at the centre of a youthful defence.

Saturday's games were called off due to frozen pitches.
