FIFTH PLACE FINISH FOR INDOOR GIRLS

05 Feb 2013

Our women finished off their debut season in Division 1 with an unbeaten day, drawing 2-2 against MCC Western and beating relegated Inverleith 3-2. This sees them finish fifth, just outside the places for a European play-off but well clear of relegation. It has been an excellent couple of months for the girls and the boost in confidence that has come from such a successful campaign can only give them a boost going back outdoor.

Key players have been coach Kareena Marshall and captain Rachael Ferguson but the girls have drawn on some outstanding displays from everyone in the squad and this represents a big step forward for them as a section and for Western Wildcats as a club. Our congratulations to all involved on an excellent achievement.

The 2s and 3s played outdoor on Saturday and both lost narrowly to Glasgow University having played well.

The Men’s 2s enjoyed a see-saw encounter with championship pretenders Grange 2s. They were 3-1 up at half-time from a Niall McLeod penalty and Simon Dick’s 2 short corner strikes. Guilty of spurning chances in both halves, Western allowed Grange more and more territorial advantage as the game went on and the visitors restored parity before an excellent finish gave them a 4-3 victory.

The 5s’ game was postponed due to a frozen surface and the 6s lost 1-0 to Clydesdale 6s at Titwood in a decent game. The 4s played a friendly against Giffnock 2s after the visitors conceded the points having arrived at Auchenhowie with eight players and no umpire.
