WOMEN BEAT KELBURNE

16 Mar 2014

It's been a while in coming but the Women's 1st Team finally got the big result they deserved with a thumping 3-0 win over Kelburne at Auchenhowie yesterday. Wildcats really looked the part throughout a game they dominated and will take enormous confidence from both the result and a performance achieved without mainstays Lucy MacArthur and Suzi Blake. The girls now go to Glasgow Green on Monday night knowing a win will leave them seventh after their eighteen league games.

The Men's 1s were less auspicious in their game against Dundee Wanderers losing 3-2 at home to the division's bottom side. The chat from the boys afterwards was very much along the lines that this was a nothing game and that it won't have done any harm to have played so poorly ahead of next week's play-offs in a getting-it-out-of-their-systems/wake-up-call sort of a way. We'll buy that for a dollar and let's hope they're right.

The 2s had a catastrophe through in Edinburgh with a dismal performance and 3-2 defeat to Grange 3s. Western are third bottom and have three games to avoid relegation starting with second-bottom Stepps and including a visit from rock-bottom Stirling University. Their final league game is at home to Kelburne who are chasing the title.

Succour came in the shape of the Men's 3s, though. They whipped Irvine 6-0 with a remarkable second half performance which underlined the frightening promise of some of our youngsters. Andrew McConnell (2), Lewis Murray, Lachy McCreedie and Fraser Moran all notched, as did superannuated has-been Andrew Sewnauth. Western finished the game with eight schoolboys on the pitch (including their entire front six) and scored two goals during this time. Leaves you with a proud glow, so it does.

The 4s were edged out 3-2 by Uddingston 4s in the final game of the day.
