Following two big wins to open their season, Rettie Western Wildcats sit top of the Women’s Premiership by a single goal. On Saturday they visit second-top Clydesdale Western in the first big challenge of their season (1530).
Wildcats’ win in last season’s play-offs came against the Titwood side and, while Clydesdale Western are traditionally one of the Scottish games heavy-hitters, our girls can go into this with nothing to fear off the back of that commanding performance.
Kaz said, “We played really well against Glasgow Uni last week and we’re looking to take that form into Saturday’s game. We are playing very well as a team and of course we are confident. I always say that there is no game in this league that we can’t win.”
“Having said that, we always respect our opponents and Clydesdale Western are obviously a strong side. We’ll need to work hard and play well to get a result.”
“Alex Stuart is unavailable but with the strength we have in the squad I’ve got a number of options and the girls who can come in are all good players. We’re up for it and looking forward to the game!”
The Women’s 2s welcome Kinross to Auchenhowie for their second league game of the season (1230). The 3s are also at home, to Irvine (1400).
The Men’s 1s meanwhile are on Tayside to play newly promoted Dundee Wanderers (1400). Western have got off to a decent start with a solid point away to Clydesdale and a 7-0 romp at home to Hillhead. Wanderers can be stuffy – last season they made the boys work very hard in a cup game at Auchenhowie – so the boys will have to be on their game to ensure they claim the three points.
Echoing some of Kaz’s comments of previous weeks Vish said, “We can struggle break down well-organised, compact defences. It’s something we are aware of and are working on a lot in training. I think this will be the challenge on Saturday against Wanderers. We have better players than them but we have to be intelligent about how we approach a team with a very solid defensive structure.”
The 2s are at home to Clydesdale 2s (1100) while the 3s face an interesting test away to Uddingston (1200). The 4s and 5s play each other at 1530.
