There was a little bit of the what might have beens at Auchenhowie on Saturday with the Men's 1s and 2s both drawing and the Women's 1s losing out to the odd goal.
The Men's 2s got the day rolling with a good performance against Grange 2s but an inability to convert chances - specifically penalty corners - saw them losing 1-0 at half-time. They battled back and scored an equaliser through Rob Barrand after sensational play by Roddy McConnell but couldn't squeeze out a winner.
The Men's 1s played a rollercoaster of a game against Edinburgh University. They quickly found themselves 4-1 down but gradually clawed their way back into the game and went into the final quarter at 4-4 and looking well placed to complete a remarkable comeback. It wasn't to be, though, and with Western down to nine men the draw wasn't a total disater. Western's goals came from Callum Duke (pictured thanks to @duncolmsports), Andrew McConnell with two penalties and a lovely deflected finish from Niall Sommerville.
The Women's 1s were a goal up against Edinburgh University and then spent most of the game locked at 1-1. Sadly, they couldn't hold on and conceded a late goal for a 2-1 defeat.
Yesterday was a very successful cup Sunday. The Women's 1s won 14-0 against GHK 2s (Amy Grassom x5, Rona Stewart x3, Alex Stuart x2, Olivia Finch x2, Sue Campbell and Kate Holmes).
The Women's 2s progressed thanks to a 3-1 win against Uddingston 4s. Natalya Chase opened the scoring in the first 30 seconds before Uddingston equalised from a corner in the second half. Wildcats were on the front foot, though, and Anna Murray and Orla Parsons scored for a well-deserved win.
The Men's 2s hammered Shetland 10-0 in Aberdeen. Credit to their opposition is due here as they flew in to Aberdeen for the game on the Saturday. Think of that next time you're moaning about having to play in Dumfries. Luke Bannerman (3), Stuart Eadie (3), Rob Barrand, Roddy McConnell, Cammy Moran and Kyle Bannerman were Western's scorers.
Finally, the Men's 3s dug out a gritty 4-2 win away to Inverleith 3s. Missing several experienced players and with something of a makeshift line-up they deserve a lot of credit for this win. Ally Scott, Roddy MacCallum, Neil Galloway and Stuart O'Toole scored their goals.
