A huge weekend at Western Wildcats with seven wins from seven games and a massive away double-header performance from the Men’s 1s, beating Kelburne 9-0 on Saturday and Grange 5-2 on Sunday.
It was an emphatic victory at Glasgow Green with Western utterly dominant and goals from Rob Harwood (4), Johnny Christie (2), Fraser Calder (2), Andrew McConnell (pictured in action for GB) and Fraser Moran hammering an inexperienced Kelburne side.
The main event, however, was yesterday’s showpiece game against the champions at Fettes. Western showed grit as well as quality to twice come from behind through Owen Jenkins-Garcia and Andrew McConnell before Rob Harwood put them ahead and McConnell – sensational throughout - completed his hat-trick.
Western now top the table on goal difference from Dunfermline Carnegie who are Saturday’s visitors to Auchenhowie.
Vish was pleased with the result but is as realistic as you’d expect saying, “I`m delighted with the three points, but it is nothing more or nothing less than that with a lot of the season still to go.”
The Women’s 1s got what looked to be a routine 5-1 win away to bottom side Erskine Stewart’s Melville. Alex Stuart, Amy Grassom, Sue Campbell, Aspen Cummings and Nicola Fletcher scored their goals.
There was no 2s game but a resilient performance from the young 3’s overcame a well organised GHK team who had made some changes from the teams’ previous meeting.
After going a goal behind Wildcats remained positive and organised, lead by their captain Freya MacPherson. Gaining in confidence they put together some decent sequences of play and we’re rewarded with an equaliser converted by Hazel Murison from a penalty corner.
The second half was dominated by Wildcats who showed quality throughout. Four goals followed: Heather Nicolson (2), Holly Murray and Abbie Brammer- Gilchrist all getting on the scoresheet. Jess O’Toole was awarded “player of the match” by GHK.
This was a really positive performance and the team look forward to another away fixture next week against Loch Lomond.
The Men’s 2s made heavy weather of their game against Glasgow University 2s. In fairness, they dominated a game moved at the last minute to Garscube due to the flooding at Auchenhowie. It ended 4-3 thanks to a classy winner from Rohan Marwaha. The other Western goals came from Sam Eadie and Cammy Moran (2).
No Men’s 3s thanks to the previously mentioned flooding at the club but the 4s and 5s both racked up impressive wins. The 4s hammered Clydesdale 5s 15-0 while the 5s beat Hillhead 7s 6-0.
