The weather couldn’t look any more Scottish at the moment if it put on a kilt and smashed eight pints of Tartan Special, so there is the risk of us losing games this Saturday. However, if all goes to plan, we see the return of the outdoor season proper and some very exciting looking fixtures.
Both first teams look to have challenging fixtures. The boys host third place Edinburgh University (1330) while the girls go to second place Watsonians (1600).
The students have been something of a bogey side for our men over the years. In fact, the only game Western didn’t win - indoor or out - in 2021 was against Uni, a 4-4 draw at Auchenhowie where the home side had to come back from 4-1 down.
Vish said, “Our preparation has been a little disrupted as we didn’t play our Scottish Cup tie against Dundee Wanderers at very short notice, so our only runout was a friendly against Hillhead. In saying that, training has been first class, the boys are looking good and we have a full squad for Saturday so we are in a good place.”
He went on, “Edinburgh University are a good, solid team and we had a great game against them last time. I think that if we start the game better than last time and play to our potential we should win.”
Our women have done well to establish themselves in fourth place after a slightly inconsistent start. Their last game in the league was a 3-1 defeat away to Watsons, something they will wish to rectify on Saturday.
Kaz said, “Our preparations for the second half of the outdoor season are going really well. The team are gelling nicely and we are buzzing to tackle the top teams in the country. We are confident we can do well and cause a few upsets.”
“On Saturday we know Watsonians will be a tough game but we are fired up for the challenge. We welcome Lucy MacMillan to the squad from the 2s.”
Both 2nd Teams are at home. The men, second in the regional league, play third bottom Inverleith 2s at midday while the women take on Falkirk who are just a place below them in sixth at 1500.
In the district leagues the Men’s 3s are away to Glasgow University 3s (Garscube 1145). Cue middle aged men being given the run-around by a bunch of 20 year-olds. The Women’s 3s host Stepps at 1630. The 4s play Ayr on Sunday and the 5s have the early shift at home to Helensburgh 3s (1030).
