The Men’s 1st Team bandwagon rolled inexorably onward on Saturday with an imperious 8-0 win at home to Dunfermline Carnegie. Some of Western’s play was a joy to behold. Andrew McConnell and Rob Harwood each snatched hat-tricks while Fraser Moran and Niall Somerville got the other two.
The Women’s 1s went down by 2-0 at home to Hillhead. The 2s managed a battling 2-2 draw away to league leaders Dundee University. Wildcats did not have a single player over the age of 18 and even saved two strokes. Murray praised their “Great fighting spirit and team dynamics.”
Sitting top of the league and with only four matches remaining the Women’s 3s travelled to Anniesland to play against third placed GHK 5s. Wildcats fought back from 2-0 down to bring the match level midway through the second half with goals from Holly Murray and Melissa Thomson.
GHK continued to cause problems for the young Cats but some solid defending from Freya MacPherson and Kate Kellock along with an inspired goalkeeping performance from Fallon Thomson kept the scores level. Wildcats had a goal awarded. However, some honesty from our striker reversed the umpire’s decision.
GHK snatched their victory towards the end bundling the ball over the line after a goalmouth scramble to win 3-2. With Bluesox not playing this weekend the Wildcats remain top of the league with only one point separating them and GHK. Bluesox slip into third place two points behind Wildcats with game in hand making next Saturday’s match at Auchenhowie between the teams a potential title decider.
The 4s lost 2-1.
