The men's and women's first teams each recorded two big wins over the weekend, leaving both well placed in the league and through to the next round of the cup.
The men demolished Kelburne 12-0 on Saturday. Their win had a nice symmetry to it with three goals scored in each quarter. Andrew McConnell got five - the fourth of which was a fabulous solo effort - Rob Harwood and Jack MacKenzie got two each while Fraser Moran and Johnny Christie each got one. Western are one point behind Grange in second place.
Yesterday, the boys smashed St Andrews University 8-0 in the Scottish Cup. There were four goals for Rob, two for Andrew and one each for Fraser Calder and Adam MacKenzie. Twenty goals scored, none conceded over the weekend. Have that.
The Women's 1s cruised to a 5-0 win over Gordonians on Saturday which moves them into third place. Olivia Finch and Rona Stewart scored in the first half then again in the second half with Becky Bruce adding the fifth. Yesterday they spurned plenty of chances and still put GHK 2s to the sword 6-1 at Auchenhowie in the cup.
Another team spurning chances was the Men's 2s. They lost 3-2 away to Clydesdale. Team consigliari Akash said, "I'm still trying to get my head around how we lost. We totally dominated and they scored with two flicks and a corner." Yesterday, they made very heavy weather of a 4-1 District Cup win over a spirited Gordonians 2s.
The Women's 2s lost 4-2 in a great game against league leaders Grange 2s. The 4s were leading going into the final quarter of their game but lost 3-1.
The Men's 3s looked excellent in the first half of their 3-3 draw with GHK and less excellent in the second half. This would explain how they coughed up a two goal lead. A bit like the 2s, lots of chances but finishing not good enough. The 4s won 4-0 against Stepps while the 5s beat Hillhead 1-0.
