A very busy's weekend's hockey saw some great results and performances across the club.
The Men's 1s led the charge with two important wins. They found themselves a goal down after a few seconds on Saturday against Edinburgh University but rallied through Jack MacKenzie, Andrew McConnell and Rob Harwood to take a 3-1 lead.
The game tilted back to the students at 3-3 and a nervy third quarter saw Gavin Somerville make some fine saves to keep the score level before a convincing final quarter hat-trick from Andrew McConnell gave them a slightly flattering 6-3 win.
Yesterday, Western hammered bottom side Monarchs 9-0 in Dundee. They are a point behind Grange and six ahead of Uni. Those three are joined by Clydesdale, Inverleith and Watsonians in the top six split.
The Women's 1s lost 2-0 to Edinburgh University at home on Saturday. The game was finely poised at 0-0 going into the second half before the students took the lead. Wildcats battled away and had a succession of corners which they couldn't quite convert. Eventually Uni nicked a second and the game was effectively over.
Yesterday the women bounced back with an important 1-0 win away to GHK. This leaves them third behind Watsonians and Edinburgh University but ahead of GHK, Clydesdale Western and Glasgow University going into the split.
Both second teams suffered narrow away defeats. The girls lost 2-1 at St Andrews 2s while the boys went 1-0 down at Edinburgh University 3s.
The Men's 3s were 1-0 down going into the last ten minutes away to Hillhead 3s but heroics from Bob Young and Ian Smart snatched a 2-1 win. A very young Women's 3s lost 5-1 away to table-toppers Troon.
The Women's 4s got a fighting 0-0 draw away to Stepps while the Men's 4s beat Clydesdale 4s 4-1 at home. The Men's 5s played out a super 3-3 draw against Greenock Morton with some fantastic performances from their youngsters.
