PLAY-OFF WEEKEND AT GLASGOW GREEN

26 Apr 2023

This weekend sees the culmination of the Scottish season with play-off matches over Saturday and Sunday at Glasgow Green. Both first teams have semi-finals against Edinburgh University on Saturday which, should they win, will ensure progress to Sunday's Grand Finals.

The women are on at 1200. Results against uni this season haven't gone their way so Saturday would be a great time to pull out a win. Wildcats finished nine points behind an Edinburgh University side who only lost the league on goal difference so they will have to be at it from the start in the semi-final.

Kaz said, "We know uni are clinical so the key for us is having a solid defensive platform to build on. Tough games are what we look forward to playing because they are ones that count for something so we relish the challenge and we believe we can beat any team in our league."

Wildcats have a full squad available.

The men play at 1600. Their games against the students are usually hard fought affairs - Saturday's ding-dong 6-4 win being a perfect example. Western finished the league ten points clear of uni and missed out on the title by a single point so they are favourites. Edinburgh University are a tidy side, though, and Western cannot let down their guard.

Vish said, "We are confident going into the game and we have already beaten them twice this season. However, we can't afford to be complacent and must show the right attitude. All focus is on Saturday's game. We have to win that before we can think about Sunday."

Watsonians women and Grange men are already guaranteed European hockey. Should either win their semi, then the final decides European ranking (winners top, losers second); should they lose their semi they take the second ranking and the winners of the final take the top ranking. Both our teams must at least make the final to qualify for Europe.
