GUTTED

11 Nov 2012

Both 1st teams were left gutted by disappointing results yesterday.

The girls endured some wretched luck, having a good goal disallowed, hitting the post and being denied a penalty in their game at CALA. A last minute consolation was all they got from their 2-1 defeat in the capital.

The boys were spanked 5-1 at home to Inverleith, conceding bad goals and failing do anything much with what pressure they enjoyed. Perhaps, had Dougie Simpson scored rather than hitting the bar late in the first half at 2-0, they might have come back into the game. It wasn't to be, though, and the points went deservedly back to Edinburgh.

If the top teams suffered then at least there was succour from our club sides. Result of the weekend was the Men' 2s' 2-1 win at home to Kelburne 2s. They went ahead early through Jonny McDonald and, although Kelburne pulled back a disputed goal not long after, Western rode their luck and skipper Simon Dick thumped home a penalty corner with ten minutes left to secure a wholly unexpected three points. Sadly they could not keep the momentum going today and exited the District Cup after a 2-0 defeat to Menzieshill 2s.

The 4s sustained their rennaissance with a 6-0 hammering of Helensburgh. The name Sewnauth appeared on the scoresheet as our former 1st Team captain continues to ease into life down the club as he might a comfortable armchair at 4.05pm on Super Sunday. Pleasingly, youth was to the fore in this game with Logan Clow and Cameron Greenhaugh impressing throughout.

The 6s won yet again, dispatching Helensburgh 3s 3-2 and proving that malingering prima donnas like Ally Trainor - missing through 'injury' - are as incidental to their ongoing success as any sensible observer might expect.

The Women's 2s took a very early lead at home to MCC Western before being whacked 7-1 by a good side. The 3s did better, though, with a stout 1-0 win over Hillhead.

The Men's 3s began their Reserve Cup defence today with an ominous looking 8-0 crushing of Menzieshill 3s. Kris Kane (3), Alastair Scott (2), Andrew Sewnauth (that man again) and Barry Kane all scored. However, none of these strikes mattered or pleased the eye more than the opener. Young Euan Anderson took posession of the ball in the D and beautifully maneovered himself the space he needed to calmly stroke the ball past the keeper. Lovely stuff.
