It wasn't to be for our cup sides yesterday with the Men's 3s going out of the Reserve Cup and the Boys' U18s beaten in the semi-final of their competition.
The 3s had a very unfamiliar look for their tie against Edinburgh Stewart's Melville with a few old warhorses out for a comeback gallop along with some yearlings making their debut. In the end a very tidy home side had just a little too much for Western and squeaked through with a 2-1 win. This is, believe it or not, the first time the 3s have lost in the cup in normal time since 2006. In the intervening period they have gone out twice on penalties and lifted the trophy on the five other occasions. Perhaps it's only fair someone else gets a chance this year then.
The U18s battled hard against an older, stronger Clydesdale side at Titwood. They played well and can take a lot of credit away from the game in spite of their 4-0 defeat. In particular Murray McDiarmid looked very much the part in goal with some first rate saves. Next year all of our players will be back at this age-group and the experience of this year will gave done them a lot of good.
