Umpiring

Umpiring at Western

Umpiring is a crucial part of the game and, as a member of Western, you are expected to take your turn.

For the most part, you must be at least a 'C' badge before you can officiate. There are, however, some leagues in which this is not a requirement and we try use games in these leagues as coaching opportunites for less experienced umpires.

To become a badged umpire you must first pass the Theory Test. These are assessed at regular Craft Nights run by the West District Umpires Association. Before you come along to a Craft Night you must first complete the test using the Rule Book and a Test Form. Both can be obtained from the SHU website.

Once you have passed the Theory Test you will then be watched umpiring a game by a panel of 2 qualified umpires. Assuming that they are satisfied that you are competent, you will be awarded your 'C' badge.

Should you wish to take umpiring further, we can arrange specific coaching with an umpiring mentor who will prepare you to sit your 'B' badge and beyond.

If you would like to know more, please us the Contact section of the site to email Alastair Scott.
WWHC Umpire Policy
From 2011/12 every player over 16 competing in the Men's West District League must have a Theory pass. From the following season, a full 'C' badge will be necessary. To this end, our policy at Western is that every player aged 16 or over must be theory passed.
