It's taken long enough, but our Men's 1s' season finally gets underway on Saturday with a home game against old rivals Kelburne (1430).
Assistant Coach James Moran is certainly relishing the new season. "We can't wait to get started," he said. "With the postponements it's been frustrating training and watching other people play but now that everyone's back from international duty we are raring to go."
One new addition to the squad is Welsh internationalist David Bond. The centre back arrived in the summer and has looked very impressive in pre-season. He should be a like-for-like replacement for Fabian Goldie who is playing his hockey in Holland at the moment.
Kelburne may not be quite the force they were. However, they still carry a serious threat and it's worth bearing in mind that Western haven't beaten them in several years. This is a hell of a game to start off the boys' season and one that is not to be missed. Be there if you possibly can.
The 2s go to Inverleith (1630) and will fancy their chances against a side that had seven taken off them by Kelburne last week. The 3s and 4s are both at home to Helensburgh (1130) and Giffnock (1300) respectively and will aim to build on their opening day wins last time out.
The girls are at GHK (1330) and will see this as a game they should win. Their season has started strongly and they currently sit second in the table. The 2s are away to Hillhead.
On Sunday their are three men's cup games at Auchenhowie. The 3s host Watsonians 4s (1100), the 2s play Hillhead 2s (1230) and the 1s welcome Dunfermline Carnegie (1400). The Women's 1s are away to Gordonians (1200).
