HEAVY DEFEATS IN A DIFFICULT WEEKEND

21 Oct 2012

The main concern for your website this Sunday evening is coming up with enough synonyms for "large margin of victory/defeat" so as to keep from repeating ourselves such were yesterday's hefty scorelines. Sadly these went mainly, if not exclusively, against Western teams.

The Men's and Women's 1s both suffered crushing defeats. Most disappointing by far was the boys' 5-0 capitulation at home to Menzieshill. Badly missing the influence of long-term casualty Steven Percy in midfield, they were quite simply second-best in every department to the organised and very competent - but hardly inspired - visitors. By common consensus they will have to improve markedly next week if they are to take something from their game at Clydesdale. Our girls' fairly predictable 7-0 doing at the hands of MCC Western at Titwood is less concerning and they will look to pick themselves up and move onto easier targets as they seek to claim a mid-table position this season.

The Men's 2s were one of only two Western success stories of the day. They tanked CALA 2s 8-0 as skipper Simon Dick led the charge with a hat-trick of penalty corner strikes. This is their first win of the season and they will feel confident of extending their run next week against the 3s who were cuffed 7-0 by a distinctly ungentlemanly Grange 2s.

The 4s looked first class during the opening exchanges with league champions Hillhead 3s and took a splendid lead early on. Sadly this was as good as it got for a desperately young Western side who were then put to the sword 7-1. Their single goal does give them the distinction of being involved in the only Western game this weekend in which both teams scored.

The 5s, perhaps sensibly given the way things went yesterday, did not play. However, the 6s did. Well done to Richard Biggans and his mighty men. A 6-0 win which even the presence of the name 'Sturrock' on the scoresheet cannot diminish came in the final game of a difficult day at Auchenhowie. All's well that end's well? Let's choose to look at it that way.
